Crosswalk
2004 L’Espace – Centre Culturel Francais de Hanoi

This exhibition was based on the innumerable traffic signs which had quite suddenly begun appearing in Hanoi, and in particular on the figures on pedestrian crosswalk signs.
Several videos were projected including videos of street traffic and collections of traffic signs in all their fascinating variety.
The main projection was of vignettes of typical scenes on Hanoi streets, into which i inserted animated vehicles and figures from the traffic signs, including several of the 22(!) different crosswalk figures, taking them off the signs and putting them into the streets.
Next to this projection was a live feed from a camera filming the shadows/silhouettes of the visitors as they entered and these shadows were displayed live beside the Hanoi vignettes.
A number of the crosswalk figures were made as life-size wooden sculptures, several small figures were cast in bronze.
A collection of 250 signs on plexiglas were hung creating a glittering maze of signs and casting their moving reflections on adjacent walls.
A sound track of original music was created by Tri Minh and Nguyen Van Cuong, two well-known local artists and musicians.
